As most of you probably already know, a steady stream of targeted traffic is essentially the life line of an online business.

After all, if no one sees your website, then you might as well not have one.

As the topic of free small business marketing ideas, I’d like to make a slight distinction. All traffic isn’t necessarily good traffic.

Here’s what I mean…

When it comes to traffic online as with most things in life, it’s quality not quantity that counts.

Keep in mind, for the best free small business marketing ideas online, the more targeted the traffic the better. More targeted traffic means a greater number of the people visiting your site will actually be interested in what you have to offer.

For the purpose of this discussion, instead of FREE traffic lets think of it as targeted passive traffic generation which is much better.

Oh… Most of the methods I’ll mention as forms of passive traffic generation are free as well so it’s a win-win deal.

Traffic exchange programs are a good way to generate free targeted traffic for your site. The way a traffic exchange works is really very simple.

As you browse other people’s ads you gain credits which are used to show your own ads. You won’t get a huge wave of traffic from these sources but it’s a great way to test ad copy, it’s very passive and it’s free.

Another very good free small business marketing idea to passively generate highly targeted traffic for your site is forum marketing. This is very easy to do.

Simply use a search engine to look for a popular key word within your market + forums… For online business, something like network marketing + forums would work just fine.

Look for about 3 to 5 forums that are active, meaning people post regularly, and post to popular discussions at least once a day. When you leave your post be sure to include a link back to your site or your capture page.

The last method I’ll discuss is a form of viral marketing, which is extremely powerful in terms of creating exponential passive exposure for your business.

This particular form of Viral exposure is called article marketing. Again, use a search engine for one of your popular market key words + articles or article directory.

Simply write a short blurb about some relevant material you have some particular knowledge about, read up on about your target market, or even a topic being discussed in your forum.

About 300-500 words is fine. You don’t have to worry about being the most elegant writer (case in point, I’m no Shakespeare), just get your thoughts down and then add any formatting you need to.

At the bottom of your article, there is a resource box where you can place some information about yourself and of course a link back to your site.

Make a habit of utilizing all these methods and before you know it there will be literally thousands of links circulating the web, and each one will lead right back to you.
